(1/16) Erin "Personal Learning Goals"

After reading the syllabus, I have begun to develop certain learning goals that I have for myself this semester. First off, I hope to learn how to establish a learning community in the classroom. Learning teaching strategies and behavioral management techniques will help me create a positive learning environment. From there, I hope to learn techniques that would help establish a collaborative community of language arts learners. I want students to be able to take responsibility and place value to their own learning.

I also hope to become more familiar with technology in the classroom. Technology can be such a vital resource to me as a future teacher. I can use it as a resource for information or as a tool to present information to my students. Learning how to integrate technology in the classroom will be extremely beneficial to them as well. Technology, especially this day of age, is an imperative resource of information for students. It also can allow them to use more create techniques to present and express what they have learned, making their learning more meaningful.

Lastly, I want to learn how to better acknowledge diversity and multiculturalism in the classroom. As a future teacher, I will respect my students as a group of diverse learners and hopefully learn how to better meet everyone’s needs. I hope to learn new teaching strategies that will be conducive to a diverse classroom culture.

We will talk quite a bit about establishing community. That, in combination with engaging and authentic lessons are actually about the best management plan. When kids feel accountable and safe in their community and want/need to be engaged in what is going on, there is very little reason for them to misbehave or be off task. I think you're really going to like our technology assigment. This was very reflective!

I did not mention technology as one of my goals, but now I am thinking that it should have been one of mine too. As much as I get upset with PowerPoint and all of those types of things, I know that it is important for teachers and students to become accustomed to them. I know that at times I get frustrated with my teachers or professors who cannot figure out technology that seems so simple to me, so I know that by the time I become a teacher my students will be so far ahead of me with technology that they will become frustrated with me. Because of this, I want to at least try to keep up so that I can be closer to the level that my students are at. Also I have to look at the fact that most jobs today require knowledge of technology and so it will be my job to prepare my students for the real world, and help them to polish their technology skills.

I can see that you are beginning to form and imagine your ideal classroom. It is kind of exciting isn’t it? The first two goals that you mentioned were developing a classroom community and becoming more familiar with technology. I know that you already know about blogs from this class, but they can also be very useful in helping you reach both of your first two goals as well. Blogs obviously involve technology and they are a great way to involve the parents of your students and your actual students outside of the classroom. This is just one example of how they can be used in a classroom, click here. if you are interested in finding out a few more ideas.

I also think it is great that one of your goals is to learn how to better acknowledge diversity and multiculturalism in your classroom. I think that it is an important and valuable of a classroom which usually goes ignored. It helps the student(s) who are in the majority as much as it does for the student(s) who may be the minority understand themselves and each other. This is also a way which will help better your classroom community as well. I think that literacy is an excellent way to help you solve this goal in the classroom. Build up a library that includes all cultures, ethnicities, gender’s, handicaps, etc… I am looking forward to see how you come in meeting these goals this semester.
