Noteblog 2/6 - Kelly Briggs

Before I took the digital native quiz I thought that I knew a lot about technology, but after taking the quiz I am questioning that. I only knew 50% of the questions that were asked and those questions were the most basic of the six. I think that I am part digital native, part digital immigrant. I say this because I know a lot about basic technology, but the more complex technologies are confusing and a little bit intimidating to me. I know a lot more about computers and technology than my mom, but my younger sister is way ahead of me. So that puts me somewhere in the middle of the technology spectrum.

The term emergent applies to my digital literacy because I do fall somewhere in the middle of the technology spectrum. I know a little bit about technology, but I do not know everything. I am slowly gaining knowledge. I have the basics, which I use to build upon. Also, I want to continue to build up more of my technology knowledge. When I become a teacher, my students are going to be way ahead of me with their knowledge of computers, games, and programs. I am going to have to learn a lot to keep up with them. The information on the website talks about how students today have so many fast moving stimuli, teachers need to embrace the knowledge that their students hold, and try to match them at it.

Emergent literacy is related to emergent digital literacy by the fact that they both can be a path on the way to higher literacy. Emergent literate students have the basic alphabet skills, can listen and retell stories, and know the order of a story. Emergent digital literate students have the basic computer skills. Both are progressing towards becoming more proficient in their particular area. Both of these students need a teacher who can lead them on that path. As future teachers, we need to be able to provide our students with literacy knowledge and digital knowledge. In order to do this, it is our job to become more knowledgeable in literacy and digital technology.

Kelly - I saw you got a 50% on the digital natives quiz, I also got a 50% on it. I read the comment you made on blog and began to wonder why I saw myself as a digital native instead of a digital immigrant. I think it was because, the things I did get right on my quiz, I felt very comfortable in. I also feel a lot of technology is interrelated. When we were learning about digital storytelling in class (which I'm not confident in) it reminded me a little bit of power point (which I feel a lot more confident in). Realistically, I am probably in the same boat as you ... I'm probably more of a digital immigrant as well (I just pretend I'm now haha)

After reading your blog, I really like how you described the relationship between emergent literacy and digital emergent literacy. I had a hard time putting into words how they were related. I think you explained it well when you said that they were both on the path to higher literacy and that the goal for both is to progress from having basic skills, to more proficient skills. You worded it very well :)

The first thing that stuck out to me from your blog was when you said that the more complex technology confused and intimidated you. Althought it can be both intimidating and confusing, I would try to get away from this perception the best I could and try to be more agressive instead. Instant messaging, web pages, blogs, and creating your own movies were all considered complex at one time, even though they may not be to you now. Take the initiative to challenge yourself and learn new forms of technology by experimenting. I would also use the resources that you have available to you as well. If your sister is pretty good with technology then you may want to ask her for advice, or you may even want to ask students in your future classroom as well. Bottom line is that I wouldn’t let technology intimidate you even though it can be very intimidating at times. I would use the resources you have around you by asking help from your peers, your students, and programs and tutorials. You might want to look into taking the class CEP 416, it is a class designtated to teaching you on how tp use the latest technology in the classroom.
